This is a format comparison, not a third best-of list. Hinges, kickstands, packed shape, and whether the kit stays out in a gust are the product. Watts still have to fit the station’s Voc window.

What folding means here

A folding portable panel is a folio of cells with fabric or polymer hinges, a handle, and usually kickstands. You unclip, unfold two or four leaves, prop the array, and aim. Packed, it is a flat case that slides into a trunk; unpacked, it is a wind catcher. That trade is why 200–400 W is practical on a driveway and difficult in a crosswind.

As listed, August 26, 2026: Jackery's SolarSaga 200W is the lightest named folder at 14.33 lb, IP68, $379 (was $429); BLUETTI's SP200L is 17.15 lb, 24.6 V Voc, $399, IP a dash (the page never gives one clean rating); Anker's PS400 is the large folio at 400 W nameplate, 35.3 lb, IP67, $699.99. Voc is a dash on the SolarSaga and PS400; neither maker's page settles on one figure. Those three are the folding aisle. None of them is a briefcase.

What a briefcase is, without inventing a SKU

A hard briefcase solar kit is typically two rigid leaves that open like a laptop and stand as a triangle; the case is the kickstand. Packed shape is a thick rectangle, often latched, sometimes with a handle that belongs on luggage. Nameplate watts in this format commonly run lower than a four-leaf folio: a smaller array that survives being leaned against a picnic table.

We will not assign a brand, a watt number, or a price to "the briefcase" as if we had a featured SKU. Without an official photo, no card goes in the grid. If a manufacturer later provides a clean studio shot and a dated spec sheet that fits the catalog rules, it can join the list; until then, treat briefcase as a shape you might still buy after your own Voc homework, not as a product we ranked.

Wind, setup, and giving up

The failure mode absent from every wattage sticker is the owner. A folio that needs ten minutes of adjustment gets left in the garage after the second gust; a briefcase that aims itself when the latches open is still out at 2 p.m. That is not a judgment of character. It is the reason format changes a day of charging.

Home backup on a driveway is usually the folding job: the goal is meaningful watt-hours into a ~2 kWh station before sunset, or into a larger home kit in daylight. The SolarSaga and SP200L are sized for that when the sun cooperates. The PS400 is the same job with more glass and a 35.3 lb reminder that "portable" is a marketing word. A hard briefcase is the format to consider when the site is camp, beach wind, or a yard with kids and dogs that would destroy hinges, and when you accept fewer watt-hours put back.

  1. Decide whether the goal is kilowatt-hours or survivability. Folding wins the first; briefcases often win the second.
  2. Walk the actual ground. A flat driveway with a south exposure favors a folio; a gusty deck favors a low triangle.
  3. Check Voc against the station regardless of format. Series jumpers kill inputs in either shape.
  4. Weigh the packed kit the way you will carry it, not the way a studio lists it.

Voc on the SolarSaga 200W and PS400 is a dash; neither maker's page settles on one figure. The SP200L lists 24.6 V. Format does not waive that homework. See the buying guide.

Buy folding when

  • You are putting meaningful Wh back into a 2 kWh-class station before sunset.
  • You have a driveway or south wall you can supervise.
  • You want a named Jackery, BLUETTI, or Anker SOLIX folio with an official photo.

Consider a briefcase when

  • Wind or camping abuse would destroy a soft folio.
  • You accept slower recharge in exchange for a lid that aims itself.
  • You are willing to shop without a featured card from this site.

Honest caveats
