What automatic actually does

An automatic standby watches utility voltage. When the grid sags or dies, the automatic transfer switch (ATS) isolates the house from the utility, the engine cranks, and selected loads return; the typical window is 10–30 seconds, not zero. You can be asleep. You can be out of town. The plant still requires fuel, a healthy starting battery, and an exercise schedule. Automatic is a transfer switch plus an engine that was maintained; there is no third ingredient.

A portable does none of that until a person does it. Someone moves the machine outdoors with clearances, starts it, plugs a cord into a house inlet (or runs extension cords), and flips an interlock or a manual transfer switch to avoid backfeeding the neighborhood. If nobody can or should do that work in ice at 2 a.m., portable is the wrong class at any wattage printed on the box. That is the entire comparison.

The cost rows are order-of-magnitude US bands, not a bid. Two adjustments matter here. A portable priced at $800 is not $800 once an electrician installs an inlet, an interlock, and a correctly sized cord. A standby priced at $12,000 can still cost less than a week in a hotel plus a dead freezer plus a flooded basement, if those are real risks at your address. Carbon monoxide and fuel

Combustion generators produce carbon monoxide; this row is not negotiable. Portable units kill people when run in garages “just for a minute,” in attached sheds, or near an open window that the wind then pushes indoors. Manufacturer clearance diagrams are the minimum; local code can be stricter. A battery-powered CO alarm is not a license to park a running engine at a bedroom wall. If anyone in the house cannot reliably keep a portable outdoors and pointed away from openings, do not buy a portable as home backup.

Standby plants still exhaust. They belong on a pad at the distances in the installation manual: openings, property lines, meters, and sometimes the neighbor’s bedroom window. A side-yard squeeze that “almost fits” is a failed inspection. Noise ordinances stack on top. Automatic does not mean invisible.

Fuel splits the classes again. US residential standby is almost always natural gas or propane. Natural gas requires no tank and often stays pressurized through the storm that killed the electric grid (common in wind events, guaranteed in none). Propane is on-site energy you own; you also own the tank level. Gasoline is the portable default: easy to buy, poor to store. It goes stale, varnish kills carburetors, and a five-gallon can is both a fire problem and a short runtime. Dual-fuel portables reduce the storage problem; they do not make you automatic.

ATS vs inlet and interlock

The electrical product on the standby side is the automatic transfer switch, not the enclosure. A service-entrance ATS can move the whole house if the generator and gas line can feed it. A load-shed or managed-panel ATS keeps the engine in its class by dropping the large loads (range, second condenser, dryer) so the lights and the well stay up. On the portable side, the legal house hook is usually an inlet box plus a panel interlock, or a listed manual transfer switch. The interlock is the sliding plate that physically prevents the utility main and the generator breaker from being on together; that is what keeps a line worker alive downstream. Extension cords to a fridge and a lamp are a smaller job, and they still require the generator outdoors. Do not backfeed a dryer outlet. Do not use a “suicide cord.” If either term is new, hire the electrician before you buy the engine.

Gas portable vs LiFePO4 power station

Portable gas generators and portable power stations share an adjective and nothing else. Stations are batteries with inverters. The kits this site features use LiFePO4 / LFP chemistry. They have no exhaust; you can run one in a kitchen. They hold a finite number of watt-hours: a fridge overnight is a job in class, a well plus a heat pump for three days is not. A gas portable has a fuel tank and an exhaust pipe; runtime is a fuel problem, not a watt-hour problem, and noise plus CO is the tax. Who should choose which

Choose standby when

  • Nobody in the house can (or should) start a machine at 2 a.m.
  • You have a well, sump, medical load, or heat that cannot wait on a person.
  • You already know install is in the budget; see cost.
  • You will exercise the unit and pay for oil instead of assuming it is a sculpture.

Choose portable gas when

  • Outages are rare and a capable person will actually maintain and start the unit.
  • You will pay an electrician for an inlet plus interlock, not a death-cord in a window.
  • You accept CO discipline and outdoor placement as non-negotiable.
  • You might instead want a LiFePO4 station for indoor-adjacent essentials; in that case, skip gas entirely.

The flip condition is staffing, not wattage. If a capable adult is reliably on site and outages are rare, the portable column holds and saves thousands; remove that person, or add a well, a sump, or a medical load that cannot wait, and the decision reverses to standby regardless of price.
