That is the physics. Noise, permits, 240 V, and winter storms are details that follow from it. Pick the physics that matches the outage you actually get.

Two quantities decide this comparison: the watt-hours a battery stored before the outage, and the watts a generator keeps making while gas or propane flows. Both products get sold as “home backup”; they are not substitutes. An expandable battery kit is quiet and bounded. An automatic standby is loud and, if the fuel holds, long.

Finite kilowatt-hours versus fuel

The F3800 ships with 3,840 Wh. Usable energy is less than nameplate; plan conservatively. A refrigerator that averages 150 W while cycling takes on the order of 1–2 kWh per day. A 1,500 W space heater takes the same pack down in a couple of hours of actual run time. Extra modules stretch the tank; they do not connect it to a gas pipe.

A 10–12 kW air-cooled standby on natural gas is a different object. It keeps making watts overnight, in a blizzard, while you sleep, for as long as the utility gas stays up and the unit was exercised. Propane is the same idea with a tank gauge you own. Gasoline belongs on portables you stand next to, not on a plant you expect to start itself.

Recharge is the battery’s substitute for fuel, and it is the weak leg. Wall AC recovers the pack quickly when the grid flickers back. Portable folding panels are weather: a 200 W folder in decent sun returns on the order of 0.6–1.2 kWh in a day, not nameplate times eight, and winter haze cuts that again. For a multi-day ice storm with no sun, the battery math fails unless the stack is large and the load list is small.

Noise, exhaust, and neighbors

Battery inverters make fan noise. That is not silence; it is also not a 3,600 RPM engine five feet from a bedroom window. You can sit in the same room as a station, which is why people buy them for CPAPs and routers. You cannot sit in the same room as a standby generator, and code will not let you try.

Carbon monoxide is the portable-generator hazard, not the battery hazard. A pad plant still needs the distances to openings that your AHJ wrote down. Weekly exercise is how you learn whether the neighbors will live with the machine before the storm rather than after. If an HOA already fights pad plants, a battery kit is not “the same backup, quieter”; it is a smaller, bounded backup that may be the only legal path on that lot.

Permits and the house hook

A station that only feeds extension cords is a consumer product. The moment you energize house circuits, you are in electrician territory: inlet box plus interlock, or a listed transfer switch. A dryer-outlet cheat cord is how people burn down the service and injure lineworkers. We will keep saying that.

A standby generator is a permit from day one: pad, gas, ATS, inspection. That is why install often costs more than the unit. The battery path stays cheaper as long as it stays portable; it becomes a project the day you want the refrigerator circuit to live in the wall during an outage. If house wiring is the point, budget the electrician on either path.

The Home Backup is not your AHJ, gas fitter, or electrician. Local noise ordinances and HOA covenants kill otherwise sensible plants. Confirm live specs and code before you buy. This page is not electrical advice.

240 V and what still will not start

Many wells, dryers, and air handlers are 240 V. A 120 V Explorer or AC200L, even stacked to 8 kWh, will not feed those loads. Locked-rotor is why electricians size generators in kilowatts and still add lockout kits.

Central air, electric ranges, and tankless electric water are usually generator problems or shed-it problems. A battery that can start a well can still empty itself keeping the well’s pressure tank happy plus a few lights. Voltage gets you in the door; watt-hours decide how long you stay.

Winter is the honest test

An ice storm grades both products at once. Nights are long; solar is weak; space heat is the load people reach for and the load that ruins a battery plan. A standby on gas does not care that the driveway is glazed. A folding panel on that driveway does. If your region loses power for three days at a time in January and the house cannot lose heat, the engine is the tool. If your region loses power for eight hours and you can close doors and wear a sweater, the battery is the tool.

Cold also changes charging behavior and can change how a lithium pack accepts current. Follow the manufacturer’s temperature limits. Do not store a 132 lb cabinet in an unheated shed and expect nameplate in a polar snap. LiFePO4 / LFP is the chemistry we prefer for home-backup cycling; it is not insulation.

  1. List the outage you actually get (hours, overnight, or days) and whether HVAC is required.
  2. Separate 120 V and 240 V loads. If 240 V is required, the 120 V cores are the wrong aisle.
  3. Price the install, not just the box. Inlet versus pad-and-gas is the real fork.
  4. Plan recharge or fuel. Panels for the battery path; tank or meter for the engine path.
  5. Test once in daylight. Fridge start, interlock, and a labeled shed list.

Buy the battery path when

  • Outages are hours to a couple of days and you can shed HVAC.
  • Indoor-safe electronics backup is the core job: fridge, network, medical devices.
  • You might roll the kit to a cabin or a different house later.
  • You will grow kWh with modules instead of pouring a pad this year.

Buy standby when

  • The house must behave like the grid for days, including heat pumps.
  • You will not babysit recharge math during an ice storm.
  • You have the install budget in generator cost.
  • Automatic transfer is the product, not a manual inlet.

The flip condition, stated once: outages measured in days plus HVAC that cannot shed reverses every battery argument on this page, and the answer becomes the engine. Outages measured in hours reverse every generator argument, and the answer becomes the tank.
